The Tosa Inu was bred specifically as a fighting dog in Tosa, which is a former province in Japan. This particular dog is rather rare, and each dog can vary significantly in size. In breeding, these dogs were cross-bred with large European breeds like the mastiff or the St. Bernard, to make a much larger dog that the original native Shikoku-Inu that the dog hails from.

Now, the Tosa Inu can be up to 32 inches in height and weight in at anywhere from 130 to 200 pounds, making them a massive and powerful breed. On the smaller scale, the Japanese breeders have focused on breeding a dog that weighs closer to 80 to 135 pounds.
