Originating in Turkey, the Kangal was bred to be a livestock guardian. They are a breed of mastiff, and are not the largest mastiff by far, but they are still incredibly large. The Kangal standard height is about 33 inches tall, while weighing in at 145 pounds, with females weighing about 120 pounds.

Because they’re not as heavy as other mastiff breeds, they are quicker and more agile, which makes them capable of reaching speeds of about 30 miles per hour.

All of this made them incredibly excellent guardian dogs for watching flocks of nervous and flighty animals. Their temperament tends to be more independent and calm, though when socialized they can be incredibly friendly and loyal.
