Given that high definition cameras were not even close to being a thing back then, this probably worked out pretty well for her! The lighting they used on films back then—combined with the quality of the film—probably allowed her light amount of peach fuzz to soften her features. That was almost what directors seemed to be going for back then anyway.
Still, it’s awful that she felt the need to use a hormone cream to whiten her skin. The pressures of fame are always going to be tough, but Marilyn seems to have felt them especially hard. Her story really is full of all sorts of tragic details.
