In May 2016, KHOU.com producer Doug Delony went jogging through Discovery Green park in Houston. Something there grabbed his attention, so he snapped a photo. He had no clue the image would go viral and touch the hearts of millions of strangers across the world.
Doug’s picture showed a man kneeling over an elderly dog. There was a baby stroller by his side… but no baby. The man had no idea he was being photographed.
Doug shared the image on Facebook, writing:
“Most afternoons, I take a run through Discovery Green, and most afternoons I see this guy with a stroller but no baby. He brings this beautiful… what appears to be… disabled pup to the park. He lets it sit in the grass and take in the smell and the sound. Here he is giving it water out of a small cup he brings with him.”
Readers wanted to know more about the dog, so Doug did some investigating. The dog’s name is Maximilian, aka Max, and he was 16 years old at the time. He’d been with his mom Edie ever since he was a puppy.
Max was blind in one eye and had severe arthritis, but his family couldn’t have loved him any more. Every day, Edie and her husband Troy put Max in his baby stroller, walked to the park, and watched their old friend “come alive.”
“I don’t think you should just turn your back on someone just because they’re elderly,” Edie told KHOU. “I think they deserve our love and our care and our attention. And there is so much we can learn from them even as they get older.”
Max passed away in June 2017, but not before leaving an incredible legacy behind.
Please SHARE Max’s amazing story with your friends on Facebook, and help us remember this awesome dog.

Beautiful story, beautiful, thoughtful human family. I would like to extend my sincerest condolences on your loss earlier this year. This story just appeared. What you did for your pup was one of the most touching stories. Bless you for your courage, strength and love of this beautiful boy. Just know he is happy and healthy now that he is over the Rainbow Bridge and will be waiting for you when your time comes. God Bless! <3

Makes me think of my sweet Angel. I got her a stroller when she was 16, blind and deaf. She LOVED to go for walks and she would ride a while, then let me know when she wanted out to walk a while, then back in her stroller. She lived a very happy, healthy life until she got her wings at age 19 1/2 on March 6, 2016. I miss her so very much, she was my little girl. She was a toy poodle and the love ❤️ of my life.

You are a beautiful couple looking after your elderly furbaby. I just love that you have given your old furbaby the attention he needs before his time comes. When the time comes you both should feel reassured that you had given him a full life.

When my boys are old I will take them to their favourite places however I can. We have the privilege of them loving them for such a short amount of time and I intend to love them fiercely for as long as I can ❤️

You never give up on your elderly pets. I have a 19 year old cat, a 17 year old cat, and a 13 year old Lab, and we are doing everything we can to make whatever time we have with them as happy as possible.

Love this. It was hard watching my dogs get old but we took care of them for as long as we could. It was done with love and the respect they deserve. They are family and they deserve to be taken care of.
