The Irish Wolfhound was a dog originally used in war – he would drag men off their horses and chariots. He could also hunt and was good at finding large game (particularly boar and wolves). Today though he’s much more of a family companion – a gentle dog who is usually calm in temperament, though sometimes silly when he plays! Regarded by many breeders as sweet and sensitive, the Irish Wolfhound does well around strangers, being a friendly animal.

Average life expectancy is only 6 to 10 years, with 7 being the average.
