Cat owners everywhere are building ‘catios’ in their backyard. These photos prove the latest craze is real

It's no secret that pet owners will go above and beyond to please their pets. But, we have to admit, the catio is taking animal luxury to a whole new level. And while the trend might seem totally “extra,” we have to say the idea is pretty great.

The idea is that the patio for cats gives your feline access to the great outdoors but gives you peace of mind for their safety. Maybe they're an indoor cat you want to keep safe, or perhaps they often stray too far from home. Maybe you're just concerned about surrounding wildlife. Whatever your reason may be, a catio is a great solution to your concerns about your cat being outside.

The catio's range in size and scale — some are attached to the windows like window boxes, while others are quite large and attached right to the side of the home. Some are even entire patio enclosures you and your cat can enjoy together. To get an idea of how people are taking advantage of the catio trend, check out some of the coolest catio's we could find.

1. The classic

CATIO SPACES

Check out this catio! We love how the design of it matches the style of the home, too. It's definitely not an eye sore. The cat owners who created it had this to say, “Mars really, really likes his catio! He goes into it through the cat door several times a day, regardless of the weather. He LOVES being outdoors and I have peace of mind knowing he is always safe.”

2. The man cave

This catio is dedicated to the Seatle Seahawks — the favorite team of one man and his cat. The catio features 12 flags, a football rug, an NFL figurine of Marshawn Lynch, a chair and of course, a few football cat toys.

3. Wildlife window watcher

CATIO SPACE

This window box catio is perfect for watching the birds and other wildlife, which your cat will love. But the big plus is that it is located below the window, so it doesn't obstruct your own views of the great outdoors.

4. The catio people can enjoy, too

By transforming an outdoor deck with some elements to jump and climb, as well as screening to keep the cat in, this is the ultimate spot for both human and feline to enjoy the great outdoors.

  1. I’ve had one for about 30 years. IThe first one was on the grass with platforms for lounging. The one I have now is about 30 by 25 with all kinds of lounging places and is under a solid cover.

  2. Susanne Ihlefeldt who would spend $1000 on a cat when you can get one almost for free from a shelter or friend! Our local spca has regular events where the wave adoption fees. (I mean, I can see Queen Elizabeth doing something like that but that’s about it)

  3. I think they can be really cool if you can afford it. Great for cats with Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, prevents stray cat fights, and cuts down the over population of cats. Just saying.

  4. Tina Potter so they can get hit by cars and have idiots throw rocks at them and God know what else cat haters do. These people are loving their cats and going above and beyond to make sure they’re happy and safe.

  5. Sherri York WOW ok cat lady…..I just know mine prefers to wander around outside, have his regular meals and playtimes with us and the dog and enjoys life…obviously I live in a cat friendly area then and don’t have the worries and concerns that you do…..rock throwers included….wow.

  6. Susanne Ihlefeldt It’s a CAT and deserves to live like one…..I would never pay stupid money for a cat when there are millions of unwanted poor kitties out there deserving good homes and hopefully it won’t be declawed to save the furniture or be bred to suit some ridiculous breeding preference for mutated kitties that are fashionable but what do I know? Oh yeah, my cats run around and enjoy themselves, catching mice and voles and sleeping in the sun….obviously I’ve got it wrong.
