When staff members arrived at PAWS Atlanta one summer morning, they immediately noticed something unusual sitting outside the shelter entrance.
An abandoned cardboard egg box had been left by the front gate.
As one animal care specialist walked closer, a tiny pink nose suddenly poked through a hole in the side of the box.
Inside were six kittens.
Sadly, while heartbreaking, the discovery wasn’t entirely unusual for shelter workers.
According to the rescue team, kittens and puppies are frequently abandoned outside the shelter in boxes, especially during busy kitten season.
“The ‘egg kittens’ were just one of several groups left at our gate last year,” communications manager Brenna Lakeson told The Dodo. “Even though it happens too often, it’s still upsetting every single time.”
Rescuers carefully removed the kittens from the box and examined them for injuries or illness. Thankfully, the babies were in relatively good condition aside from being slightly underweight and covered in fleas.
After treatment and plenty of food, the kittens quickly began improving.
Soon, they were placed into foster homes where they could receive around-the-clock care and attention while continuing to grow stronger.
“Fostering is incredibly important, especially for very young kittens,” Lakeson explained. “They need constant monitoring, feeding, and socialization that’s much easier to provide in a home environment.”
As the kittens grew, their playful personalities began shining through — along with their hilarious breakfast-themed names: Hard Boiled, Sunnyside, Scramble, Omelette, Yolkster, and Eggs Benedict.
Eventually, after being spayed and neutered, the kittens became available for adoption.
It didn’t take long for every single one of them to find loving homes.
Two especially bonded siblings, Sunnyside and Omelette, were even adopted together.
While saying goodbye is always emotional for foster families and rescuers, the happy endings make it worthwhile.
“There’s nothing better than getting updates from adopters later on and hearing how loved they are,” Lakeson said.
What began as a heartbreaking discovery in an abandoned egg box ultimately turned into six beautiful new beginnings.
