Generally considered dogdom's finest all-purpose workers, the German Shepherds are large, agile, muscular dogs of noble spirit and high intelligence.
There are many reasons why GSDs stand in the front rank of canine royalty, but breed experts say their dogs’ most important attribute is character:
…loyalty, courage, confidence, the ability to learn and retain commands for an amazing number of specialized jobs, and the willingness to put their life on the line in defense of loved ones.
Well-bred GSDs of proper training and socialization will be gentle family pets and steadfast guardians eternally devoted to their human flock.
But, says the breed’s written standard, there’s a “certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships.”
If you are considering to own a german shepherd, or you’ve just become a new german shepherd owner, there are some realities you do need to fully accept.
Check out the twelve realities new german shepherd owners must accept on the next page! …and if you already are a german shepherd owner, see if you can relate!

I have had 4 GSDs. Only the first one got on the couch. All had their beds. All were loving affectionate dogs. They all had the look. I only had one today, Heidi is only two years old. She guards the house, is friendly to my friends, likes my kitties and is my friend. They have each been special in their own unique way. I socialize them so they can play with other dogs, children and people. I love all dogs, but for the dog that will save my life it is the GSD. I had a Dobie years ago, and he saved my life too. Big love to my dogs.
