Generally considered dogdom's finest all-purpose workers, the German Shepherds are large, agile, muscular dogs of noble spirit and high intelligence.
There are many reasons why GSDs stand in the front rank of canine royalty, but breed experts say their dogs’ most important attribute is character:
…loyalty, courage, confidence, the ability to learn and retain commands for an amazing number of specialized jobs, and the willingness to put their life on the line in defense of loved ones.
Well-bred GSDs of proper training and socialization will be gentle family pets and steadfast guardians eternally devoted to their human flock.
But, says the breed’s written standard, there’s a “certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships.”
If you are considering to own a german shepherd, or you’ve just become a new german shepherd owner, there are some realities you do need to fully accept.
Check out the twelve realities new german shepherd owners must accept on the next page! …and if you already are a german shepherd owner, see if you can relate!

Had a shepherd when I was a teenager! And he was the best dog ever! He was very protective with little kids and with our immediate family! He never hurt anyone!

My neighbors GSD saved my life one weekend (I was dog sitting for them) from a stray dog attack, he jumped out of the car to attack the other dog and the stray ran for its life. Then he ran back beside me and sat on my feet and started doing that “talking” business they do when they get excited. We got in the car and drove back home but the whole way back he had his paw on me and kept licking my face like “you’re my favorite human” haha. I told my neighbors about it and they said they have never seen him get so excited about me coming over (he used to run with me before I joined the military so he knows when I come over its usually to go out and play) and never seen a protective side in him like that (he’s very laid back and friendly) but he has even jumped on my neighbors it’s when I come to visit if they get to close to me (not aggressively just to push them away) so they give us some time alone when I come home from time to time. Now they have a female GSD and in a few years plan to breed her, they have promised me to pick of the litter! I’m so thrilled my two favorite dog breeds have always been Labs and GSD and I’ve seen the devotion and loyalty both have for the ones they love most!
(Dutchess: top, Zar: bottom) I plan to name the dog “Harley” after their very first GSD whom I loved very dearly too! ❤️❤️❤️
