The German Shepherd Dog is a natural protector and so adaptable and intelligent that he has performed just about every job known to dog. If he had opposable thumbs, he would be unstoppable.
They are highly intelligent and will not be content to live life as a couch potato. He's a dog of action, and needs to live with an active person who will give him a job worthy of his talents.
German Shepherds love children and make great family dogs when they are given early socialization and training.
Most of us think of the German Shepherd as a black and tan dog, but they can also be sable and solid black.
Dogs with white, blue or liver-colored coats are frowned upon by breeders, so don’t fall for marketing claims that those colors are “rare” and command a higher price.

A lot of the things they talk about in this article apply to all dogs. There is something about GSDs though. They are no doubt about the smartest dogs you can find and the comment about a GSD with opposable thumbs made me laugh. My comment on #10. Puppies are a cute pain in the$#%&!@* Old dogs have spent their whole lives loving and trying to please you. How can you abandon them? I could tell a long story about loosing one of our two last Great Danes. To make it short when we knew we were going to lose him I spent the has last two weeks with him in the lower level of our house. He had gone blind from glaucoma and it scared him. He wouldn’t walk. We could hand feed him but we couldn’t get him to drink water. I watched TV with him and slept on a large air matters at nigh. And cried for weeks after he was gone.

Need a bit of advice: after four years rescued, this GSD mix has suddenly started separation anxiety again (he did when he was first rescued). Cries and barks when either my son or daughter-in-law go upstairs to sleep (he is now allowed because of elderly cat). It is causing sleep deprivation for the couple – not a good situation. Any advice ?
