The German Shepherd Dog is a natural protector and so adaptable and intelligent that he has performed just about every job known to dog. If he had opposable thumbs, he would be unstoppable.

They are highly intelligent and will not be content to live life as a couch potato. He's a dog of action, and needs to live with an active person who will give him a job worthy of his talents.

German Shepherds love children and make great family dogs when they are given early socialization and training.

Most of us think of the German Shepherd as a black and tan dog, but they can also be sable and solid black.

Dogs with white, blue or liver-colored coats are frowned upon by breeders, so don’t fall for marketing claims that those colors are “rare” and command a higher price.

These are some of the things we probably already know about German Shepherd dogs if we live with one. However, there are a few things all German Shepherd owners must remember about these wonderful companions.

    We discovered very quickly that a young GSD, very quickly weighs as much as I do. At 18 months she lunged after a deer on a walk, while hubbie had her on an extending lead. At 73 years old, his abdominal muscles had disappeared, and he ended up with surgery for a double hernia! At 5’2″, I’m the ‘wee’ bad witch! I take no nonsense, and am always alert to possible her diversion of attention. I trained all 3 of Gemma’s predecessors, but this time round my husband wanted to be more involved! Like the others, she will calm down eventually, but right now we have a naughty teenager, and two owners with differing attitudes about rules!!

    Brice comes to me from his handler/breeder and is the love of mine and my husband’s life. We have two other dogs and they adore him to death we couldn’t ask for a better puppy, this big goofball is ten months old and has stolen not only our hearts but also the hearts of everyone around him…

    Please excuse his acorn his family jewels were showing!!!

    That last one did hit hard. Any time Taz had surgery when he was sedated he was in my arms, when he came out of it he was in my arms. He never knew I left him. And last year on Dec. 3rd he took his last breath in my arms. I can still feel him there almost a year later.
