15 Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know About Boxers

11. A Boxer holds a Guinness World Record for the longest tongue in the world!

Guinness World Records reports that Brandy, owned by John Scheid of St. Clair Shores, Mich., had a 17-inch long tongue. Brandy, born in 1995, was euthanized in 2002 due to “a stomach disorder that is common in boxers,” according to Guinness. Read more about Brandy at Tungdog.com.

12. Tail Docking/Ear Cropping Was Originally Due to Hunting.

The tail of a boxer was originally docked and the ears cropped so that wild animals could not get a hold of the dogs during hunting.

Boxers descended from the bulldog and mastiffs, which were also used for hunting and once had their tails docked and ears cropped, as well, says the American Boxer Club.

The practice of ear cropping and tail docking isn't as common as before, though. In fact, many people with boxers prefer not to do either to their dog.

13. No Such Thing as a Black Boxer.

Boxers are either fawn or brindle (tan with black stripes), but never black. If a boxer looks black, it is more likely to be a “reverse brindle” or a very dark-colored brindle. Some boxers also have white markings.

14.Boxers Have a Unique Jaw.

The dog’s square jaw is known as “undershot,” meaning the lower jaw protrudes beyond the upper and curves slightly upward, the American Boxer Club says. The incisor teeth of the lower jaw are in a straight line, with the canine teeth up front in the same line. This makes for a really wonderful and unique smile!

  1. I have had five boxers 2 white,2 brindle and 1fawn. My best friends ever make me laugh when they can look human at times. Large lap dogs. One of my white ones was deaf he new sign and no one could tell. He did sleep sometimes when he should have up. He was in his silent world. Tufferbear 85 lbs of pure love.

  2. well just to set a few facts straight the 3rd pic is a Mastiff not a boxer pure white boxers are a result of a genetic mutation caused from inbreeding, they are still the same lovable dog just should not be bred as continued breeding could cause severe health problms as these are prone to blindness deafness and other health problems. They don’t drool constantly usually they are only slobbery and drooly after meals or water. They were originally bred for bear hunting not fighting their temperament is too mild for fighting. I have come by this knowledge by way of my mother in law who was a judge and breeder for the German boxer club in Germany for over 30 years. We still breed them to this day but they are correct when they say it take 3 years for them to reach maturity and they should not be bred until after that and should only be bred every other heat because of the large litters it is very hard on the mother (b***h). A boxer should not be bred after 6 years old. The average life span is 10 years although my dogs grandmother lived to be 17. Although the ear docking isn’t a popular practice any more many people do have the tails docked still because they are very long and thin and often break or get cuts because they wag like a propeller in a circular motion instead of side to side. If you are looking to buy a boxer make sure you have the time to take care of them. They do require a lot of attention and can be mischievous if they are left on their own too much. If you do have to leave them for extended periods of time it is best if you tire them out with rigorous exercise first so that they sleep well while you’re away. The other important fact is that they require the dog food you give them to be changed regularly, they like variety and will stop eating in protest if they are getting the same food all the time just make sure when transitioning from one food to the other that you mix the last few bowls of the old brand with the new one so their stomach doesn’t get upset. The most important thing about boxers is that they think they are lap dogs so if you have nice leather couches and think that you can train them not to jump up on the furniture, think again. They may adhere when you’re home but you will come home to scratch marks on your couch. They are family dogs and expect to be treated the same as the rest of the family. So cuddle time with the kids includes the 70-90lb boxer right in the middle. This is the only breed of dog i will ever own as they are the most personable dog out there. Every boxer is unique and amazing.

  3. I also like pigs, and I always enjoyed the fact that our boxer used to grunt like a pig when he was eating. He so loved his food. Miss that boy. He’s in doggie heaven now.
