27. Punishing Them

Contrary to popular belief, dogs don’t actually feel guilt when they’ve done something wrong. That ‘guilty look’ you see on dogs who are being scolded is just a reaction to your emotions.
Dog’s are particularly in tune with how we feel, and if they think that you’re upset with them, they’ll show you all kinds of platitudes to make up for whatever emotion you’re putting out there.
When you punish your dog, you’re only serving to stress them out and cause more bad behavior. The best type of method to get your dog to stop doing something you don’t want them to do is to positively reinforce the behavior that you do want.
