Every dog deserves a “puppyhood”, but a 10-year-old Yorkie named Katarina never got the chance until now. The tiny dog spent her whole life living in a cramped cage at a puppy mill. But that life changed for her when she was rescued by the Hub City Humane Society, in Mississippi, and placed with foster caregiver, Ashleigh Reader.
Katarina’s personality instantly began to shine with her newfound freedom and Reader immediately noticed that the Yorkie was fascinated with toys and decided a trip to Petsmart was in order.
Reader filmed what happened when Katrina was brought inside the store and let loose to pick her own toy. “This is what happens when you take a dog to Petsmart who has lived her entire life in a puppy mill! She was just a little excited!” said Reader.

This video brought to you courtesy of an amazing foster family. First time this ten year old Yorkie we named Katarina ever got to shop for her own toy!! She has spent her entire life in a tiny cage at a puppy mill. Her foster parents have committed their home and hearts to this girl for 3 months as we get her dental and spay surgeries done and treat her heartworm disease. Interested in fostering? Fill out an application on our website, hubcityhumanesociety.org or run by the shelter. Desperately looking for a foster for a little older male Maltese from the same puppy mill that also needs a foster home during Heartworm treatment. “She has the sweetest personality regardless of everything that she’s been through,” Reader told The Dodo. “When I picked her up, she was obsessing over any toy she saw, so I figured she would want her very own toys. We went straight from there to Petsmart.”
Katarina ended up picking two toys, one being a squeaky corn dog that Reader says Katrina gave loving licks on the way home.
“Her foster parents have committed their home and hearts to this girl for 3 months as we get her dental and spay surgeries done and treat her heartworm disease,” the humane society says on Facebook of Katarina’s stay with Reader.
It looks like Katarina is making up for lost time when it comes to play time. I’m sure she’ll make her future family very happy!

I rescued a Yorkie 11 months ago. She is an older puppy mill dog too old to bear pups, so they dumped her at a shelter (at least they did that). I bought numerous toys for her and she doesn’t know how to play, not even with a ball. She gets all the love she can handle now! She’s my little sweetie. <3

I rescued a 2 year old puppy mill Yorkie and she is the same! She has no idea how to play. She finally learned to chew a bone after watching my other dog. Hasn’t gotten tug of war or fetch down yet but I still love her!

We adopted our little yorkie (who also came from a puppy mill) was dumped off at an animal shelter when he developed some health problems. He came from deplorable conditions & was just a mess when we got him. We have had to spend a lot of money getting him back to good health but he has been worth every penny that we have had to spend on him. We have had him for 3 years & he is our baby. The picture is what he looked like on the day that we adopted him. I wish it was against the law to run puppy mills!

My first rescue was at least 10 ,maybe more they said. Tumors from being over bred a broken jaw. And was just the sweetest dog ever. Had her for 3 years till her health deteriorated. Lost a piece of my heart on that one. My newest is 7, she was bred for the 5 years she was in a puppy mill. Thank God they let her out to a rescue earlier. Hope I have many more years with her.

We bought a little Yorkie that the person lied to us about her age. We took her straight to the vet. She was older than we were told. Very skinny, very scared. We couldn’t bear to take her back. It was a hard time watching the door because she wanted to run. Any noise scared her. ( we got a carrier out once for trip to vet and she was having a terrible fit. Never tried again ) Well after loads of love she slowly came out of it. We had her fixed and soon she gained weight and ended up with a beautiful coat. The groomers said it was one of the best.
Cassie is in doggie heaven now & I still shed a tear missing her. So happy she was loved the last few years of her life.
