It’s amazing how loyal our pets can be, even when we’re gone. Dogs are especially known for their unending loyalty: From Odysseus’ dog Argos to Hachikō, the world is full of stories of dogs staying faithful to their owners til the end.
But what about cats? Dogs are known as man’s best friend, but cats tend to be thought of as more distant and uncaring.
But one heartbreaking story shows that cats are capable of undying love for their owners—and even grieving for them when they’re gone.
A man named Keli Keningau Prayitno would always see a cat returning to the same spot every day, lying on a patch of earth in Central Java, Indonesia.
He realized the heartbreaking truth: the cat was visiting the grave of her former owner, an old woman who passed away.
“Since the cat’s mother died she has stayed here at the grave,” Keli told The Mirror. “She does not want to go home.”
The cat visited the grave every single day for over a year. Keli tried to adopt the cat, and others have given her food and water. But the cat refuses to go with anyone else—she just wants to stay with her old owner.
Keli says the cat is still taken care of by the old woman’s children, but the cat insists on leaving to visit the grave.
“Then the cat would go back again to the same place,” Keli said. “She sleeps there and meows.”
“It’s very sad to see. It shows just how close animals are to their owners.”
It’s heartbreaking, but a reminder of how much our pets truly love us 💔
