Lively, Playful, Devoted, Clever, Stubborn, Courageous… these are some of the words to describe a typical Dachshund's temperament.
The Dachshund is bold, curious and always up for adventure. He likes to hunt and dig, tracking by scent and going to ground after game. He is independent but will join in his family's activities whenever given a chance.
He is good with children in his own family. Some bark. The longhaired variety may be quieter and less terrier-like; the wires may be more outgoing. Some miniatures are more prone to be timid.

Gotta love dachshunds. The stubbornness is REAL though. Put steps up all you like, they’ll still jump to spite you.

My dachshund loves my kids, but they are full size at 17 and 20. They hate childrens voices and most kids in general but we have a few short friends they will cuddle with.

I know a lot of dogs that are not good with kids, but my doxie LOVES kids! She is so sweet and gentle with them, and normally tackles them to the floor and covers them in licks.

I have had more than 20 Dachshunds and NEVER have they bitten a child. Must be how they are raised.

I don’t agree with the kid bit. They are great with kids, but like with all dogs, the kids must be supervised until they learn how to respect the animal

Ours was kind of reprehensible at first when we got stairs, but then he finally warmed up to them and uses them all the time to get up and down the sofa and our bed

They house train….if they want to. Two of ours are perfect. #3 was scolded for pooping in the house….he now believes that pooping is bad…anywhere. Now he holds it for a couple days until he can’t hold it any more. I take him for long walks to get him used to doing it outside, but the little snot will walk for miles and not go.

Says don’t let them jump. Are you kidding! Maybe if I had no furniture. I have steps but she jumps over them. I just hope she stays healthy. I’ve had 6 in my life. Love them.

We lowered the legs on our bed so they could jump up and down safely. And not good with kids? I don’t believe that, if they have been around them their whole lives. Our dogs LOVE our grandkids and any other kids they can get close enough to lick.

We’ve had 2 and lost bed them until the end. Still miss them dearly.Anyone know someone selling at a reasonable price. Or just needing to rehome a young one. The ones we have seen at rescues all have a heart condition. Single young adult really doesn’t have money for one that’s going to require that extra expense.

I have to disagree with the “snappy, not good with kids” label. Our pups from the time we brought them home, spent time with four of our grandkids and love them to death. The kids are in for a lick fest whenever they come over. Our dogs have never snapped at any of them, or anyone else for that matter. It may depend on early exposure to dog savvy kids.
