A Highspire police officer and his wife are facing public wrath for withholding food, water and veterinary care to the dog under their care.
The Pennsylvania couple was on a vacation when local residents discovered the grim situation of their 5-year-old emaciated Golden Retriever mix, Bruno.

Rescue group “One Dog at a Time” says that Bruno is about 20 to 30 pounds underweight, has open sores and smells of urine.
52-year-old owner Officer Jeffrey Levan and his 34-year-old wife Amber Levan claim that Bruno is skinny because of cancer.
However, investigations have revealed that the couple never took Bruno to the vet’s after he got his shots as a puppy.
A detailed vet report suggests that Bruno is free from any medical condition or disease, and his emaciated condition can only be attributed to deliberate starvation.
The couple has admitted that there is no “documentation” to support their claims about Bruno’s cancer. We hope the emaciated dog recovers soon.

Update: After heavy public outrage for 6 months, Jeffrey and Amber have been sentenced to 3-12 months in Dauphin County Prison, followed by one year of probation. They were forced to surrender Bruno, and will also have to pay $4,255.95 for his rehabilitation expenses.
Amber has lost her job in Dauphin County Prison after being charged, while Jeffrey has been placed on unpaid leave.
