12 Realities New Yorkie Owners Must Accept

The Yorkie has a bold personality and seems unaware of its small size. They are devoted to their owners, and become very attached to their family and are not always ideal for the very elderly or small children with their lively and exuberant nature.

yorkie 13Most will prefer to share your bed if you allow. They are tolerant of older children, provided they are not treated like toys and have their own space to which they can retreat.

Full of energy, they can keep up with kids, but because of their small size, toy breeds like the Yorkie can be injured relatively easily by falls, other animals, or human clumsiness…

They are eager to play and get into any trouble they might find. They have a mind of their own and this feisty, sweet little dog doesn't like to do anything he makes up his mind not to do!

Even though this breed is categorized as a toy breed, there is a lot of terrier in them. They like to be busy, inquisitive, and bold.

While a toy breed, and at various times a greatly pampered one, the Yorkshire is a spirited dog that definitely shows its inner personality.

  1. My Cairn breeder had Blondie on Royal Canin and I asked top Cairn breeders about it. They said excellent food and add probiotics. So,, I bought RC for Jackson. He does have a beautiful thick black coat. A lot of Lil Yorkies have trouble with blood sugar and you may have to make adjustments for that,,, Cora Butler. My old pack and my Labradors all grew up on plain puppy/dog chow. Those were different times tho. We have a cairn/chowX and he gets itchy if he doesn’t get grain free. In the Cairn groups the consensus one time was that most ppl recommended petsmart grain free. It’s been great for our rescued boy,, Elvis.

  2. I contribute it to his size. I thought he was born 1995,,, but it was ’94. I remember the events. We bought him after the n.y. ’95. And he was 6 mths old. Zeus was a junkyard dog hell on wheels. A big time scrapper. He never passed up a good fight. And I vividly remember the day he passed. The day after my husband’s B-Day,, 1Sept. And a hurricane came thru. My husband just had major surgery on his shoulder in July but he buried his old boy in the rain. Memories. That’s why I say I’m very blessed.
