10 Weird Dog Behaviors Explained

Why dogs run away

Dogs are curious and they love nothing more than being active, sniffing around and exploring. When they're left alone in the yard with nothing better to do, they may take themselves out on a little walk around the neighborhood.

Dogs also run in an attempt to answer nature’s call, like searching for a mate or chase a prey.

Reproductive drive is a powerful thing. And intact male dogs especially are driven to roam in search of a mate. Even the most sensible well-trained dog could be overwhelmed by natural urges.

If the neighbor's unspayed dog is hanging out on the sidewalk, and your pooch catches a whiff, the urge to mate could lead them straight through the fence and down the road.

Another reason your dog runs away is because they want to chase a prey. Dogs have incredible hearing ability. Your dog may just be running after a nearby squirrel or a stray cat that they see or hear.

Of course, many dogs are spooked by sudden loud noises like fireworks, thunderstorms, or even a house party.

Fear can cause any well-behaved pooch to suddenly get away to protect themselves.
