A few years ago, in August of 2016, a Good Samaritan happened upon an adorable stray Pit Bull in New York and decided to help him out by taking him into Brookhaven Animal Shelter.
The sweet little guy was given the name Nitro, and everyone who worked for the animal rescue fell in love with the pit bull almost as soon as they met him. It was a no-brainer that this little guy would be on his freedom ride to his forever home in no time at all, and so they waited…and waited.
Now, Nitro has been in the shelter for an unbelievable 981 days, close to three long years. The poor pit bull spends his days in his kennel, praying his forever family is out there looking for him.

For the past few years that Nitro has been stuck at the rescue, his shelter life has been taking a toll on the sweet pit bull.
Just a 5-year-old pup, Nitro has no idea why he is left at the shelter and hates it when he has to be put in his kennel when he is just dying to be loved and played with. Of course, the pit bull has plenty of people that do love him, every single person to either work or volunteer there, to be specific, but even with all of the love and support of shelter workers, it doesn’t replace the love of a family that he knows he’s missing out on.

A volunteer with Brookhaven Animal Shelter, Brittany Broderick, describes in an interview with The Dodohow Nitro spends all of his time in his kennel eagerly wishing for his forever family to show up.
“He is handling shelter life pretty hard. He will cry in his kennel thinking when will his day come, but when he’s out of his kennel, he will have a big smile on his face, and is loved by so many volunteers,” she explains.

Even though the poor pit bull has difficulty accepting life as a shelter dog, he never fails to inspire the people around him to keep positive with the huge, infectious smile Nitro so often has painted across his adorable face.

As a matter of fact, the precious pit bull is smiling so frequently that there seems to be no end to the adorable photo ops the shelter staff get to take advantage of.
Nitro isn’t just adorable though, he is stylish too! He can frequently be seen rocking vibrantly colored bandanas throughout the shelter.

A person who loves a happy face would be pretty hard pressed to find a dog that’s more smiley than Nitro. His grin is so big that it seems to swallow his face whenever he gets excited, and it’s basically impossible not to smile right back at the adorable pit bull!
Anytime Nitro gets the chance to run around outside of the shelter walls, he gets a perma-grin that just can’t be stopped and he LOVES his impromptu photo shoots when he’s out with his human friends from the rescue. He simply cherishes his time away from his kennel with the people that love him so much.
Even though this beautiful pit bull struggles to get through his own lonely days at the shelter, it doesn’t stop him from forcing a smile out of everyone he crosses paths with. Any family would be incredibly lucky to have his happy face around!

Just like any healthy young puppy, Nitro is crazy active and loves all the playtime he can get. Whether it’s simply going for a nice long stroll outdoors, hiking, playing ball, or just zooming around outside, if he gets to play like the puppy he is and has his human by his side, he will legitimately be the happiest dog you’ve ever known!
Nitro would just love to be a part of a forever family that loves to enjoy life as much as he does! He is such a love bug, in fact, that he requires all of the affection of his owners. He will need to go to a home that doesn’t have any other furry residents or small children, and with humans that will cherish him like the amazing furbaby, he is.
No matter how much love you shower this fun-loving pit bull with, you can always count on him to give you just the same in full measure.

When it comes right down to it, Broderick and all who know the adorable pit bull know that Nitro is simply a big ball of love and happiness and just wants to share that with a family he can call his own.
“All he wants is to be loved and be at home where he belongs. Not a shelter.”
