Earlier this month, the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) got an urgent call from a local resident who’d heard tiny, desperate cries echoing from above.
When the Good Samaritan looked up, they spotted a small kitten stranded on a narrow ledge under a highway overpass — 16 feet in the air with no safe way down.

Animal Care Officer Garcia arrived first and tried to reach the terrified kitten with a net.
But the little survivor wasn’t ready to be caught.
“The fearful feline had other ideas, darting back and forth, keeping out of Officer Garcia’s reach,” SAACS wrote on Facebook.

Soon, two more Animal Care officers arrived, bringing the equipment needed to attempt a safer rescue. Together, they set up a ladder and positioned a humane trap, slowly working to corner the tiny cat they’d already nicknamed Zelda.
A few tense moments later, they managed to gently secure her and bring her safely down from the ledge.
“The dynamic trio of officers worked together to ensure Zelda’s safety, bring her down from her perilous perch and transport her to Animal Care Services,” SAACS wrote.

Zelda spent the next few days decompressing at SAACS’s headquarters, where staff made sure she was warm, safe and finally able to rest.
Word of her rescue soon reached the Animal Defense League of Texas (ADLT), who instantly fell for the brave kitten. They brought her into their care to give her the best shot at a loving forever home.
“They transferred her into their care, where she will be nurtured and loved until she’s ready for her [forever] home,” SAACS wrote.

Now Zelda spends her days soaking up affection and attention, her life under the roaring highway long behind her. With each passing day, she gets closer to the family she deserves — all thanks to the people who refused to leave her stranded.
“Thank you to all who helped rescue the adorable princess,” SAACS wrote. “You are now known as heroes in the Legend of Zelda!”
