While driving through Bakersfield, California, a volunteer from R.A.D. Rescue spotted a pit bull scavenging through roadside trash. At first glance, his unusually chubby face seemed almost endearing — but within moments, she realized something was terribly wrong.
“His head was incredibly swollen from having a tight chain around his neck,” the volunteer later shared on TikTok.
The dog, now affectionately named Chunk the Hunk, was in desperate need of help. Acting quickly, the volunteer coaxed him over with some chicken and safely got him into her car. From there, she rushed him straight to the vet.
Despite the swelling and what must have been intense discomfort, Chunk sat calmly in the backseat, smiling up at his rescuer — as if he knew his luck was finally changing.
Thankfully, the swelling was treatable. With time, Chunk’s face returned to its normal shape, and he began the journey to heal not just physically, but emotionally.
Based on his condition, rescuers believe Chunk had spent most of his life chained up. But now, freed from pain and neglect, he started to blossom.
Through patient training, Chunk learned how to just be a dog — discovering the joy of play, companionship, and daily adventures. He even got into shape, albeit a little reluctantly.
He soon became a lovable, well-mannered companion who adored other dogs and embraced life with his whole heart. But there’s still one thing missing: a forever home.
Though Chunk’s story has touched thousands since his rescue, he’s still waiting to find someone who will give him the love and stability he’s always deserved.
