There Was Something Strange About This Stray ‘Dog’… Then Rescuers Realized The Shocking Truth

In Los Angeles County, animal services have taken in close to 200,000 lost or homeless dogs in the last six years alone. These statistics are staggering, but among them, one dog definitely stands out from the crowd.

Though he may have looked it on the surface, New Boy wasn’t just any ordinary dog. When rescuers got closer to him they realized they were dealing with a creature they had heard about, but never seen before.

When New Boy was found wandering through the streets of an LA suburb, rescue teams were able to quickly corral him.

Once they got a good look at him, however…

…They realized that he was definitely no ordinary dog.

He was actually a wolfdog: a wolf/dog hybrid!

Michelle Proulx, the director of animal care at W.O.L.F., could see that New Boy was in rough shape and timid around humans, but she took him in, determined to rescue him.

New Boy was dehydrated and starving, so Michelle and her staff started by giving him fluids and food.

After taking the frightened wolfdog to the Wellington Veterinary Hospital, they realized that he was anemic and suffering from inflamed feet.

“When we first met him, he was extremely timid and very scared,” Michelle said.

Even though they’ve only been together for a few days, New Boy is finally starting to relax around his new caretakers.

“I think he’s starting to realize that it’s going to be okay,” she said. “We’re not seeing the same intensely fearful animal that we met initially.”

Michelle also pointed out that most wolfdogs don’t make it past the age of two.

This is because they become too much to handle, and so their owners give them up.

They’re not traditional dogs, and most dog owners don’t realize that until it’s too late.

The domestic dog breed genes most commonly found in wolfdogs are Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies, and German Shepherds.

Believe it or not, evidence for wolfdogs’ existence in the Americas can be found as early as 10,000 years ago!

As for New Boy, the plan is to build his appetite and teach him to trust the people helping him. Then, Michelle hopes to find him a female companion.

Thankfully, this special boy is on the road to recovery!

He may have been abandoned by his owners, but thank goodness New Boy is finally getting the love he deserves!
