Why More And More Young Women Are Choosing Dogs Over Motherhood

According to a New York Post article published back to 2014, more and more young women are forgoing childbirth and motherhood in favor of “doggy children”.

If you’re wondering why playgrounds around the city are so quiet and dog runs are packed, a new report has an answer: More and more US women are forgoing motherhood and getting their maternal kicks by owning handbag-size canines.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that a big drop in the number of babies born to women ages 15 to 29 corresponds with a huge increase in the number of tiny pooches owned by young US women, reports the business-news site Quartz.

Dog-crazy New York ladies told The Post that they aren’t surprised by the findings — and that they happily gave up diaper changes, temper tantrums and college funds for the easy affection of their doggy “child.”

More and more dogs surely have moved from dog houses and kennels to share our most intimate spaces, not only in city apartments, but increasingly also in hotels and offices. There's luxury dog hotels, dog cafes and dog fashion.

It's acceptable to take your dog everywhere these days, even to dinner parties. Not too long ago, dogs were kept outside. Now a days, they sleep in your bed or a bed made especially for them.

We are no longer dog owners but dog “parents”, now choosing such civilized names for our canine companions as Wilson and Ava rather than Fido or Lassie.

We treat our dogs exactly like “real children”, if not better, not only investing in interactive feeding bowls to stimulate their brains while they eat, but even going to the trouble of having their intelligence tested by canine cognition experts.

While we would not say dogs are the new children, we have to admit they are a wonderful alternative. And for some, dogs are the best solution whereas a lifestyle with children may not be in the cards!

“I’d rather have a dog over a kid,” declared Sara Foster, 30, a Chelsea equities trader who says her French bulldog, Maddie, brings her more joy than a child.

“It’s just less work and, honestly, I have more time to go out. You . . . don’t have to get a baby sitter.”

…Mary Smith, 25, of Murray Hill, said her 6-month-old French bulldog, Toliver, brings her as much joy as a baby would.

“Dogs are better! Look at Toliver! He’s great, except he snores a lot. He even has his own Instagram,” Smith said during a walk with the pooch. “A dog is easier to transport than a child. It’s less final than having a child.”

While not always inexpensive, especially when that vet bill shows up, dogs are still an option not to be ruled out!

  1. No one should procreate just so someone can take care of them when they get old. You hope, but that should not be the reason to have kids. If i ever have kids, I’d check myself in a nursing home if I must because I would not want my kids’ lives to revolve around taking care of me. I would want them to be free and happy.

  2. Whether we have kids or not, if we stay in United States that’s where we will end up. Lol the majority of parents don’t have kids so that someone can take care of them when they’re older. At childbearing age I don’t think very many think about that just yet. Many parents become parents without thinking. I think many of those who don’t have kids may also be that way not necessarily because they don’t want kids…So many women just kept foregoing it for the perfect time, with the perfect person. It is much easier to find a perfect dog 🙂

  3. I hear that all the time when i say i dont know if i want kids. “But who’s gonna take care of you when you get old”. And you are right, nowadays many parents become parents without thinking. Scary! Having kids is the ultimate sacrifice… Yaiiiikkks. Scary as hell! No doubt it can be fulfilling, but man! That is one scary idea!

  4. I love dogs and always have and will, but they don’t feel the void and all the pain from not having children. Wanted children more than most. My dogs were so awesome. Back also when I didn’t know all this could happen. Francy, Pierre and Sierra…good times
