I have had to resort to tricking too, I had one dog, we put the dish on the table and we set to eat. After a few moments, I would set her dish on the floor, and she would gobble it up, thinking she was eating what we had for dinner. Now I have dogs who like warm food, so I can put wet or dry food in the microwave warm a bit (dry I have to spay with a bit of water) and then give it to the dogs, they will eat better if it is just a bit warm. Even between a choice of cold can dog food or room temp, they will eat the room temp and not the cold. I think we have treated them like humans so long, they are behaving like us is being picky.
