The Blair Pug Project: A Vet Student’s Hysterical Synopsis of Trimming a Pug’s Nails

Trimming nails on your Pug is not always a fun job. Some pugs are reluctant, even terrified of getting their nails trimmed.

Some even starts screaming, yelping, and moving around constantly. You fight tooth and nails (no pun intended) to get their nails cut… the ultimate challenge of grit and persistence.

Have you ever experienced the pleasure of trimming a pug's (or any reluctant dog's / animal's) nails?

Well, this 2nd year veterinary student, Roberta who's studying at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University sure can relate!

Check out her hysterical synopsis of trimming a pug's nails on the next page:

  1. my pug Lulu actually has to be sedated to have her nails cut as she gets so hysterical when someone tries to cut them, i wish there was another way as the sedation itself presents risks but even my vet thinks it’s the only way :/

  2. Nothing funny about that clip. The pug is clearly terrified. That 2nd yr student must have flunked out of PetSmart for texting while clipping. The only thing worse is that horrible paw buzz site.

  3. ABSOLUTELY EN POINTE!!!! I am literally crying reading this… this is the story of my pugs life with nail trimming!!! I swear, I tried, WITH HELP.. doing it myself for years but finally gave it up! Who knew that while trimming a pugs nails that a 17 pound dog could roll like a 1,500 pound alligator in a death roll???…. TRUE STORY I SWEAR! I would be sweating and in tears and cursing by the time I finished… if I actually did ! They Noe go to the vet to have it done… our Black pug is not really that bad, but our older Fawn pug was just horrible to deal with!!!

  4. My Pug, Pongo almost fainted with fear and distress over nail clipping!! He would scream something terrible. He calmed down 90% when I bought an electric nail file!! The dremmel did the trick. I wish I had found out about it sooner!! Try it, it worked for us!! Good luck!

  5. Mine is the same way, without the howling, but he has a groomer who gets it done with a minimum of nonsense. He also has eye drops in both eyes twice daily, antibiotic in one eye twice daily, has enough wax in his ears to supply Yankee Candle, eye pus that if I miss it hardens in his face and would prefer a colonoscopy to the mouth spray daily. He has gotten so he hates to see me coming. Topping that off he is now on urinary diet only, no more snacks, treats or etc. Lost his hearing due to anesthesia 2 yrs ago over unnecessary surgery. I am over protective, but trust me, I wouldn’t let those two numbskulls within 20 ft of him. TY

  6. Yes, I can! I’m a pug mom and my girl screams and howls like she is being attacked. It takes four people to get her nails trimmed…at our Vet’s office! Their staff is very understanding and experienced with pugs.

  7. For 9 years, hubby would hold her and paw while I tended to nails. She received tiny treat after each one, but would squirm. It took over 20 minutes that was stressful to all. Month ago, hubby took her downstairs and laid her on her back on his legs. He clipped all in short time. He’s now in charge…Lol.

  8. I absolutely LOVE Tufts University. They saved my pug Frank who had a lung torsion (flipped lung) and yes he’s a complete maniac when clipping nails lol he’s still going 7 years strong with 1 lung! Thank You staff at Tufts!
