The older a dog is, the harder it is to be adopted. As shelter dogs age, the chances of finding a family and a forever home become more slim.
A lot of people want puppies when adopting a dog. The younger the puppy is, the easier it is to train them and you get to spend more time with the dog as it grows.
Jackson, the Golden Retriever, sits patiently outside a busy Target store waiting for his owner to return. Adopted from an animal shelter less than a month ago, the 3-year old Golden Retriever has been training every day.
He visits local high-traffic locations to practice ignoring distractions while his owner hides just out of sight and keeps an eye on him.

Older dogs are still funny, loveable, playful. They luv you as much as a younger one & yet be calm enuf with most little kids. My rescue is 11 yrs. old Doxie. I luv him to pieces. He looks like Caruso, a black & tan.

I adopted two elderly poodles 10 years ago. One was approximately 12 years old & blind. The other was approximately 11 and had serious health problems as well. I was fortunate enough to keep Chance for 5 years before he passed away. And Bella I had for 6 years. Both had been flagged to be put down when I adopted them. It was worth every moment & money spent to care for them. They gave me as much love as I gave to them. I’d recommend it for any pet lover.

Jackson is one of the lucky ones. For every Jackson, there are many who never get the chance. Sad commentary on the world we live in.

My little buddy Jester was 10 when I adopted him 2 years ago this June. While puppies are cute, older dogs have already been housebroken, they already know obedience and tricks, ….and when they wind up in a shelter because they have some grey around their muzzles they’re so happy for someone to love them again. My buddy had been surrendered to the city shelter TWICE, …and for the life of me I can’t figure out why!!!! He’s one of the two best dogs I’ve ever had, and reminds me so much of my beloved dog from my childhood. Jester and I bonded the moment they brought him in to see me at the shelter, and there was no way in HELL I was leaving there without him. I may only have a few years with him, …but they’ll be GOOD years, and he’ll never have to see the inside of a shelter again. Anyone who would surrender a dog simply because they’ve gotten old and can’t see, hear, or run like they used to should have the same fate in their OWN elderly years.

We went to the RSPCA Victoria (Australia) and there was a 7 yr old goldie there that we wanted to adopt, but because we already had 2 others, these pricks wouldn’t let us SO BLOODY ANGRY.So no donations to them anymore.

You didn’t read the story did you? Daddy is training this 3yr old pup to wait patiently in high traffic areas to learn to ignore distractions. The owner did NOT abandon him, he’s outside the dogs line of view watching him. Kind of like a message to not give up on older dogs because they can be trained too just like a puppy.
