Every living creature’s life must come to an end at some point and while there are some who get the chance to enjoy a fuller existence than others, the dog in this story got a unique surprise during its final hour. Even though the Chihuahua in this story was very sick and very old, there was still one person who was willing to make sure this dog lived a great life even if only for 24 hours.
Heather Hayes is no stranger to sick and elderly dogs, as she regularly works with distressed animals as the marketing manager of the Asheville Humane Society. However, when the Chihuahua who typically hid from all passerby was staring back at her when she passed her cage, Heather knew this was a sign.
Heather made the selfless decision to take the dog home with her, since she was essentially unable to be adopted and facing the end of her life. She wanted the dog to be able to experience what it would be like to have a home, even if it was just for 24 hours.
When Heather took the dog home, she was only expected to live through the night, but the experience seemed to provide her with a whole new breath of life and she remained alive the next day.
Since the old girl had decided to stick around, they would have to give her a new name. She was given to the shelter under the name of Jersey Girl and while Heather and her husband considered Josie or Jazzy, they would soon settle on Jay-Z as a name for their new pal.
Jay-Z is enjoying her new life with her siblings and she is living proof that the love we have for our pets also has a healing power. Be sure to pass this incredible story along to your friends and family members on Facebook.

I love this story. I love senior dogs. I volunteer at my local shelter and it’s so sad that senior dogs get looked over all the time. God Bless and thank.you for saving her.

wait.. she took it back to the shelter to be put down after 24 hours? Why is it endearing that this woman could only spare 24 hours for this dog?

oh ok. I feel mislead by the title. I had assumed the dog had 24 hours before it was put down, but that’s my mistake. Good news after all.

Since I just turned 68 and my youngest dog is 14 months old, I think that in the future, I will only consider older dogs. I’m thinking 8 and up.
