Castaways is a documentary series chronicling the successful rehabilitation program of inmates that train unwanted dogs for re-introduction or adoption.

The series rehabilitation program highlights the plight that both prisoners and unwanted dogs face, and how an unlikely union between the two brings out a change in character of both man and beast — each trying to save and serve the other.

The results are life-changing for the prisoner, the dog, and the future pet owner.

In the video below, you’ll meet a dog named Esther who was severely abused in a puppy mill before being rehabilitated through the Prison-trained K-9 Companion Program. It’s simply incredible to watch as Jason, a prison inmate, forms his bond with Esther, and eventually must say an emotional goodbye after successfully training her and helping her emerge from her shell.

We’ve seen the impact made when these two groups of societal outcasts meet. It’s truly heartwarming — because, while many people shun both inmates and “undesirable” breeds like pit bulls and rottweilers, this program gives them an opportunity to look to each other for affection, friendship, and understanding and to foster each other’s growth.

This type of program should be employed in more prisons across the country.

    Whoever thought of this training program is a special kind of person to help unwanted dogs a new life also these prisoners another chance at proving their worth in society This is a program which should be tried in all prisons

    Even what kind of person u are still we have passion to be nice.this dog sense that there is some one who in need of loved and cared. We dont haved to forget lord is always there watching every one.people or animals haved chances to be loved.

    This is such a great thing for the inmates tho. Brings out the softer side… emotionally it gives them a release of the anger, bc u have to have good behavior to do that….. and the dogs are troubled they work with…. double bonus

    They aren’t bad people sometimes just make bad decisions. I look at it this way we were given a second chance we totally didn’t deserve why not people like him. What society view as trash when really they aren’t.

    This is the most wonderful news I’ve heard in a long time, even though I couldn’t watch the video. I’m sure the dog and inmate will learn some great companionship and the innate will feel good about doing something good again and learn how lovely this feeling of doing good again, as for the dog, he will be ready to give a new family all the goodness that animals do give. Very excellent and clever idea. Definitely a win win situation. Pat on the back for the human that thought of this.
