When an abused pet is rescued, removing him from his situation is only the first step toward saving his life. He also faces a long road ahead of physical recovery, followed by a period of learning to trust and open up to humans again.
But the hardest journey of all for a rescue animal is finding the perfect forever home, or the place where he will finally be loved and cared for. This is especially true for pets who have noticeable physical ailments or psychological problems from their abuse.
That could have easily been the case for Mojo, a three-month-old pit bull puppy with mange. Yet, nobody—not even him—could have expected how wonderfully things would turn out…

Arguably the most difficult journey of all for rescue animals is finding the perfect forever home, or a place where they will finally be loved and cared for. This is even more true for pets who have noticeable physical ailments or psychological problems.
When this three-month-old pit bull puppy was removed from a home with terrible living conditions, he had a severe case of mange and he was in horrible physical shape. It was clear that he’d endured serious abuse and neglect.
Joey Wagner, who created a nonprofit animal rescue organization in Nova Scotia, Canada, a few years ago, quickly stepped in and rushed the pup to an animal hospital. If the veterinarians didn’t act fast, there was a chance that the poor dog could lose his life.
The puppy, who they later named Mojo, began a slow but steady recovery. Adoption requests came pouring in, but the center could not consider regular adoptions because of the severity of his condition. Mojo needed special care.
