While driving her usual route through a rural area near Tamms last month, a mail carrier noticed something heartbreaking just off the roadside.
Hidden among leaves and thorny brush was a cluster of tiny puppies curled tightly together for warmth.
There were 16 of them.

The shocked mail carrier immediately contacted a friend involved in animal rescue, and word quickly reached Save Them All Animal Rescue cofounder Ali Rippin.
Knowing the puppies urgently needed help, rescuers quickly organized a plan to get them to safety.
One rescue volunteer who lived closer to the area carefully gathered the puppies and transported them to a nearby barn where they could finally warm up and rest.
When Rippin arrived and saw the dogs in person, she was devastated by their condition.

“It was absolutely heartbreaking,” she later told The Dodo. “They were clearly extremely dehydrated and severely malnourished.”
The puppies were immediately rushed to a veterinarian, where teams worked to stabilize them. Along with dehydration and starvation, the tiny dogs were covered in fleas and ticks and suffering from parasites.
Sadly, despite everyone’s efforts, two of the puppies did not survive.
But over the following days, the remaining 14 slowly began improving.
As they regained strength, their playful personalities started to emerge. The frightened puppies who once huddled silently in the woods soon began seeking affection, cuddles, and attention from their caregivers.
“They eventually relaxed and soaked up all the love,” Rippin said.
Because the rescue organization is small and entirely foster-based, caring for so many puppies at once was a major challenge. Thankfully, three additional rescue groups stepped in to help, allowing the puppies to spread out into safe foster homes where they could continue recovering.

Now, the surviving puppies are thriving.
Rescuers expect them to be ready for adoption once they reach 8 weeks old, and they’re hopeful each one will go on to live a long, healthy life with loving families.
Rippin also hopes the story serves as an important reminder about the need for spaying, neutering, and supporting local rescue organizations.
Without the quick actions of rescuers and foster volunteers, these puppies may never have gotten a second chance.
