Rid your home of fleas. Here are 4 natural ways to kill and repel fleas to keep your house safe

Does the thought of fleas make you itch? It should! These pesky insects not only affect your dog or cat — they can bite and irritate humans as well. Fleas reproduce very quickly and before you know it — your house has a flea infestation.

If you already have fleas in your home, it’s important to get rid of them quickly. If you don’t have a flea infestation in an animal household, you’re lucky — it’s best to start prevention methods as soon as possible.

The problem with many flea killers is that they contain nasty chemicals.

We have found four natural remedies to ensure that your pets, and your home, are itch-free!

Rest-assured that these four natural solutions will keep your entire household safe.

1. Power up the shampoo

For a flea-free home, you should already be diligent about bathing and grooming — but there’s an easy way to turn up the flea-killing power of the dog shampoo you’re already using!

Simply mix ½ cup of your dog shampoo with ½ cup of freshly squeezed lemon; spray the solution on your fur baby once a week, and you can check “flea-prevention” off of your to-do list.

2. Make a homemade flea collar

The flea collars available at many pet stores contain chemicals that could irritate your dog or cat’s skin — even making them sick. There’s an easy way to repel fleas while your dog is playing outside — with a flea bandana!

Mix 3 to 5 drops of lavender oil with a couple of tablespoons of water. Use an eyedropper to place a few drops on a bandana. Tie the bandana loosely around your dog’s neck and voila! No fleas.

3. Create a homemade non-toxic flea killer

If your pet already has fleas, here’s a delightful smelling non-toxic flea killer you can make at home. Mix ½ cup of baking soda and ½ teaspoon of essential orange oil — shake the two ingredients together in a jar. Sprinkle your pet and rub it in — simple as that.

4. Use landscaping to keep fleas away from your yard

Certain plants and herbs are wonderful for deterring fleas (and other pests!) from entering your yard. Plant things like sage, catnip, lemon balm, lemongrass, mint, and basil. Place a few pots of these same herbs around your property for additional flea deterrent.

Summer is the perfect time for fleas to sneak onto your pet and into your home. These four tricks and solutions are an easy and all-natural way to make sure you and your fur babies are free from fleas.

  1. THANK-YOU for sharing this, I can’t use chemical flea deterrent because my family human and canine have allergic reactions, so I have to use natural solutions. Some of these I knew but the rest are fantastic additions to my cleaning regimen.
