Firefighters rescue dog trapped in storm drain: ‘Teamwork makes the dream work’

Sometimes dogs get stuck in some pretty tricky places, and it takes some kind people working together to get them free.

That was the case recently, after rescue workers joined together to save a dog trapped in a storm drain, a story that shows the power of teamwork.

According to a social media post from the Richmond Fire Department, they received a call on February 14 from a passerby who said they heard a dog barking from a storm drain.

The fire crew arrived on the scene and found a troubling sight: the dog, a 40-pound pit bull terrier mix, was stuck in the mud and water in the corner of the drain, with only his head sticking out of the water.

One of the firefighters climbed into the water, which was 6-8 feet deep. He was able to get his footing on a piece of metal sticking out of the concrete, and his colleagues passed him a rescue rope to secure around the dog’s neck.

The firefighters were then able to lift the pit bull mix to safety. The department said the call took less than 10 minutes.

They then delivered the dog to Virginia Veterinary Centers, and thankfully he was in good shape despite the ordeal. “They said you would have never known he was stuck in a storm drain,” Richmond Fire Department wrote.

The dog was then taken to Richmond Animal Care and Control, who named the dog Michelangelo. It appears the dog was a stray — the firefighters mention that he had no collar when found — but thankfully, the dog is now up for adoption.

The department wrote that Michaelangelo is 2 years old, prefers to be in a home without other dogs or cats, and anyone interested in adopting can reach out to the RACC.

It’s great to see that this dog is now safe and sound and on his way to a better life. The Richmond Fire Department was thrilled with the result and said it was “an example of what can happen when City of Richmond, VA departments work well together.”

“Teamwork makes the dream work,” Richmond Animal Care and Control agreed.

Thank you to everyone who saved this sweet dog! We agree, teamwork does make the dream work. We’re so glad Michelangelo is safe and hope he finds a forever home soon!
