When S’mores finally left the San Francisco Bay Area shelter, his tail wagged with pure joy. After all, this was the moment he’d been waiting for — someone had chosen him. But that joy lasted only half an hour.
Thirty minutes after walking out the door, S’mores was brought back. The reason? His new adopters said he was “too big.”
Everyone at the shelter was stunned.
“We were completely flabbergasted,” said Sarah Meiches, cofounder and president of Mutt Luv Rescue. “The idea that S’mores was returned for being too big after just 30 minutes was absurd. He didn’t grow in that time!”
The sweet dog came back to the shelter confused and heartbroken, his shoulders slumped as if he understood he’d been rejected yet again. But his story was far from over — and this time, it was headed toward a much happier ending.
Word of S’mores’ return spread quickly through the rescue community. Within hours, Mutt Luv Rescue and Not Your Average Rescue teamed up to get him out of the shelter for good.
“An amazing foster immediately stepped up and offered to open her home,” Meiches said. “Once we had a plan in place, we worked together to get S’mores safely out of the shelter. It really showed what can happen when people come together for good.”
After so much disappointment, S’mores finally got to experience what love and safety felt like. His foster family quickly discovered that he probably hadn’t lived indoors before — everything was new to him. But he learned fast and adapted beautifully.
“S’mores is very smart, silly, happy, social and curious,” Meiches said. “He loves going on hikes, learning new things, and being part of whatever you’re doing — whether that’s cooking, working, or just cuddling on the couch.”
Despite his rough start, S’mores radiates joy and affection. His foster family can’t believe anyone could look at this goofy, loving dog and think he was anything but perfect.
“He’s such a good boy,” Meiches said. “With a little support, he’s going to be the pawfect addition to the right family.”
S’mores may have been returned once, but he’s not giving up. This time, he’s waiting for someone who will see him for who he truly is — a big-hearted dog who just wants to belong.
