Earlier this month, a large dog named Eddie was abandoned alone in a park in St. Louis, Missouri, tied tightly to a water meter pole with no way to escape.
Confused and terrified, Eddie barked nonstop as he stood helplessly in the cold. Then the weather turned even worse.
Rain began pouring down, leaving the stranded dog soaked and shivering in the mud.

Thankfully, a nearby community member heard Eddie crying and contacted Stray Rescue of St. Louis for help. Rescuer Donna immediately rushed to the scene.
“When we saw him standing there on that short rope in the rain and mud, all we wanted to do was get him somewhere safe,” a shelter representative later shared with The Dodo.

At first, Eddie’s appearance may have intimidated some people. He was a very large dog, barking loudly as rescuers approached.
But Donna could tell there was more to him than fear.
She slowly introduced herself, speaking gently and offering snacks to show Eddie he was safe. Before long, the nervous dog relaxed enough to trust her — and soon he was curled up inside the warmth of her Jeep.
Rescuers expected Eddie would need time to adjust to shelter life after everything he’d been through.
Instead, he surprised everyone almost immediately.

“Honestly, Eddie adjusted in about one minute,” the rescue shared. “As soon as he got inside, he started rubbing against everyone, climbing into laps like he was a tiny puppy, and covering us in kisses.”
The giant dog quickly became a favorite among staff members thanks to his affectionate personality and goofy charm.
Despite his size, Eddie turned out to be incredibly gentle and eager for attention. Staff say he would fit well with many different kinds of families, whether they enjoy outdoor adventures or quiet nights at home.

“He’d love a family who takes him on walks or plays fetch, but he’s also perfectly happy snuggling on the couch afterward,” the shelter explained. “He could thrive as the only dog or with another playful companion.”
Most of all, Eddie seems ready to love anyone willing to love him back.
“Eddie is such a goofball,” the staff member said. “His huge smile is absolutely adorable.”
Not long ago, Eddie stood alone in the rain believing he’d been forgotten. Now, he’s surrounded by people determined to help him find the forever family he deserves.
