When Abby was found wandering the streets in September, she was frail, sick, and desperately scavenging through garbage just to survive.
At 10 to 12 years old, the nearly hairless senior dog had clearly endured a long, difficult life.
Animal control officers who picked her up knew she needed more than they could provide — so they reached out to the Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana for help.
The moment rescuers saw Abby, their hearts broke. Her condition was worse than anyone expected.
“She had ear and skin infections, a broken back leg, and other issues that had clearly been ignored for far too long,” Sarrah Walton of the Humane Society told The Dodo. “She was in rough shape.”
Despite her condition, there was something in Abby’s eyes — a spark that hinted at the joyful dog hidden beneath the suffering.
Her rescuers sprang into action, beginning a long road of healing filled with daily medicated baths, ear treatments, medications, and eventually surgery.
Through it all, Abby remained sweet and strong — and little by little, she transformed.
“She received large amounts of love and care during this time,” Walton said.
Today, Abby is hardly recognizable. Her once bare skin is now covered in soft, fluffy fur. Her eyes shine, and her personality beams.
She’s gone from a forgotten street dog to the beloved queen bee of her rescue group.
“She is doing AMAZING,” Walton said. “Abby is spunky and sassy. She loves snuggles, rules over the little dogs, and lives for attention from volunteers.”
With just one more treatment to go, Abby is nearly ready to begin the next chapter of her life — this time with the love and family she’s always deserved.
