Labrador Retrievers are known for being intelligent, trusting, and loving dogs. It’s no surprise that they are the most popular breed in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.
For one Labrador owner, their dog John Boy isn’t just their best friend — he’s their hero.
Officer Jeff Gonzalez was doing his regular patrol when he noticed something along County Line Road in Germantown, Wisconsin. As he got closer, the police officer realized it was an extremely frantic black dog.
The dog was John Boy, and he was darting back and forth, barking loudly, and clearly acting desperate. Officer Gonzalez could tell that the panicked dog was trying to tell or alert him to something.
“He stood there and barked a little bit, then I rolled down my window and called to him. Then he wagged his tail and got more friendly until I got out of my car. And then he ran a little bit,” Officer Gonzalez told Fox 6.
The cop followed the dog and was led to the front porch of a home where a woman was unconscious, slumped over in a chair.
It turns out that the woman was Krystal, John Boy’s owner. She had been sitting in the 3-degree weather, unresponsive, for over an hour. Gonzalez quickly called for emergency medical assistance.
“To be honest with you, I thought she was dead. And when I went up, she was very cold to the touch; her lips were blue. But I was able to determine she was breathing and had a pulse. I called for assistance and my partner was close. So together we got her in the house,” said Gonzalez.
Krystal’s daughter, Tianne Wendt, was notified of the news and couldn’t believe what had happened. She couldn’t comprehend that she was so close to losing her mom. Thankfully, Krystal had not one, but two heroes that day.
As it turns out, Krystal had a heart condition and was taken to the hospital where they were able to bring her to stable condition.
There are so many things that Krystal can be thankful for. Coincidentally, Officer Gonzalez was driving down the right street at the right time. And, of course, if it wasn’t for John Boy and his heroic actions, things could have turned out much worse for this loving mother.
John Boy the Lab had been returned to the shelter three times before finally being adopted by Krystal. It turns out, she adopted an angel covered in fur.
