The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog and is named for the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. Chihuahuas come in a wide variety of sizes, head shapes, colors, and coat lengths.

Chihuahuas ancestors have been cuddling with their owners as long ago as 9th century AD! These dogs are known for their big hearts, but did you know they have big brains, too? There's also some fascinating information about their history.

  1. They are should not be indiscriminately breed. Often can not free whelp & only have litters of one or two pups. They are fragile due to the small size. Recommended for only experienced dog owners.

  2. Teresa Sandnas some people supervise the kids but about every other rescue I fostered had a broken leg or two from an accident with a child under ten. They were dumped at kill shelters because the family could not afford the vet bill &for heart worm positive because the preventive meds were “too expensive!”

  3. I disagree that chihuahuas aren’t good around children! I have 3 and they all love and protect my grandkids ages 3, 4, 9 & 11
    They’re great with everyone. They do get protective with me, but when kids come by me, they’re gentle with them. It’s almost as if they know that my chihuahuas aren’t the only babies. My chihuahuas are 10, and other two are 8 and I’ve had them all since birth. Daddy, daughter and son
