There are safe ways to travel with a dog in a truck. The way one man in Roanoke, Virginia, recently traveled with his dog is a shining example of how not to do it.
Emily Betterton was a passenger in a vehicle traveling along route I-81 when she spotted a dog loosely tied to the back of a flatbed.
Betterton asked her husband to pull up closer to the truck so they could engage with the driver.

“It looks like he was just secured loosely by what’s called a martingale leash, meaning that if he were pulled, it’s wrapped around his neck and it’ll get tighter. Basically, if he were to fall off, it would probably break his neck,” Betterton shared.
They looked at the driver and mouthed to him, “Hey, your dog,” but he just gave the couple a thumbs-up sign.
“I was like, uh, that’s not okay with us,” Betterton stated.

She took photos of the dog tied helplessly to the truck and reported the vehicle to the state police. Although she does not know what became of the dog, she hopes this calls attention to the way people transport animals.
When a local reporter contacted the Roanoke Valley SPCA, Community Relations Director, Suzanne Cresswell said it is best to have a crate for a dog in transport and then to bungee-cord the crate into place.

“The Roanoke Valley SPCA believes in the humane treatment of animals and that certainly falls outside of that purview,” Cresswell reported.
