The story of Cookie is a hard one to wrap your mind around. She was found as a stray along with a younger Labrador, but their family only claimed the Lab. The Cocker Spaniel was left behind, abandoned and confused. But thanks to OC Small Paws So UT, Cookie gets a second chance at life.
This senior Cocker Spaniel was found along with a young Labrador and taken to a shelter in California. They were able to contact the dogs’ family, but this is where the story takes a sad turn…
The family claimed the young Labrador but left Cookie behind. She had to watch her family walk away in abandonment.
Lynn Hamilton of OC Small Paws So UT heard Cookie’s story and wasn’t about to let her spend one more day alone. Cookie was immediately set up with a foster family.
Cookie was fortunate to be in a loving home, but the hardships were far from over. A veterinarian found 12 cancerous tumors and was able to remove most of them. She will have to undergo a second procedure to remove the remaining tumors.
“We have made the collective decision to not adopt her out,” they announced on Facebook. “She will stay under the care of the rescue for the rest of her life. She also will be under the care of our vet who has already done her first surgery.”
I think they made a wonderful decision to keep Cookie and not adopt her out. She will now spend the rest of her life under the care of amazing, loving people. It’s unfortunate that her original family gave up on her, but it’s comforting to know where she is now. 🙂

This is just another case of people having to have a pet to ‘make their house a home’! What they fail to grasp is that a home is somewhere to spend loving time with your ‘family’. When you take a pet, they become part of that family and you wouldn’t abandon a child so why would you want to abandon your pet?!

I own 2 cockers and they’re with me and my family for the rest of their lives. I loved (and still do) my first cocker, Hollie, from the day I got her until the day she had to go to the bridge. If anything, I loved her more with each passing year and I still miss her terribly. I feel the same way about my Sally, a poodle, who passed in 1981

what is wrong with people. I had my cocker spaniel for 16 years and I had to put her down for health reasons…it was like putting my child down…I can’t understand how they don’t become a part of some people. ….so sad makes me cry for that poor little baby girl…

When a read the original story of this sweet baby being left at the shelter I cried like a baby. I could not believe people would turn their backs on this precious dog. I could only imagine how sad this poor baby was. I am so glad to hear she has been rescued. I pray God will heal her little body and she will be loved for the rest of her life. ❤️

Sounds like Cookie is the luckier of the two. She got her medical situation being taken care of. Old owners would not have spent the money to correct her problem. Win win situation.

Seems like the reason her family abandoned her might have been because they knew she had tumors, and rather than make the effort to raise the money for treatment or find an organization to help, they left her behind.
I have two cocker spaniels. They mean everything to me, and I’ve gone into debt making sure they stay healthy. I will do it again and again if they need it, and I won’t regret it for a second. They’re my best friends, they’re part of my family…hell, they’re part of me. I look at them sometimes, when I hear stories like this or encounter a dog who doesn’t have a caring family, and I think about how dogs deserve our best, because they never give us any less. I’m very lucky to have them, and I hope they know that they’re with me for life, no matter what happens.

Where does she live? With the lady in the pictures? She looks like she really loves Cookie. I hope so. Cookie needs a human to love and to love her back.

Cookie is extremely lucky. The vet’s and nurse’s are amazing. The things they can do and do do is so special and priceless. Cookies 2nd lease on life is amazing and the best lease on life ever.
