Joey Sala was in the basement finishing up some laundry when an eerie feeling started to creep over her. She was eager to head back upstairs when suddenly, something caught her eye.
From the dark space under the stairs, a pair of glowing eyes stared back at her.
Startled, Joey let out a scream. For a split second, she thought she’d stumbled into a real-life horror movie. Then, she realized who the “shadowy figure” really was.
It was Pepper, her mom’s black cat — sitting calmly in the darkness, completely unfazed by Joey’s panic.
“She scared me so bad,” Sala told The Dodo. “She didn't flinch at all when I yelled. She stayed right there … It was like being in a horror movie. You don't want to find anything or anyone staring at you through the stairs in the basement!”
Of course, this wasn’t Pepper’s first scare. With her dark fur and love of hiding in shadows, she’s made a habit of blending into black clothing, purses, and any dimly lit corner she can find. Spooking her family has practically become her signature move.
“Pepper does blend in a lot,” Sala said. “She likes to lay on black clothing, my mother's black purse [and] in almost any dark place.”
While Joey was relieved her “basement monster” turned out to be just Pepper, she knows her mischievous feline won’t stop anytime soon.
As far as Pepper is concerned, there’s nothing better than giving her humans a good jump scare.
