20 Things All Dog Owners Must Never Forget

It's been often said that dogs are the only creatures on earth that love you more than they love themselves. Well, ain't that the truth!

Here are some of our favorite dog quotes that are short and to the point, but that really conveyed how we felt about dogs, and why we do what we do here at PawBuzz:

“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.”
“Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog it’s too dark to read.”
“Whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend never owned a dog.”
“Unconditional love is as close as your nearest shelter.”
“What a beautiful world it would be if people had hearts like dogs.”
“In a perfect world, every dog would have a home and every home would have a dog.”

a dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself – Josh Billings

Sometimes, we take our furry friends and wonderful companions for granted.

If we want to pay back the favor and give them the best life possible, these 20 important reminders should serve you well as awesome dog owners. The last one (#20) brought me to tears…

  1. That last one was so true, Dogs Love unconditionally they don’t care what you look like when you wake up in the morning or what kind of mood your in, and if your sad they can sense that and put a big old smile on your face by just giving you one of those sloppy kisses that we love.

  2. The pictured pups are my babies!! Zoe, Louis & Shelby on vacation in 2012 – they were waiting for us to come back from the beach!

  3. We recently had to let our “Dolly Girl” go over the Rainbow Bridge. She was 13 years old and the love of my life. We bought an Old English Bulldog one month before we had to let Dolly Girl go. Dolly Taught Marley many lessons before she died. I do not think I have ever loved a dog as much as I loved our Dolly Girl. She loved company, loved giving kisses, and loved seeing us when we returned from work each evening. Thank you Dolly Girl for the unconditional Love and Devotion. We Miss and Love you to Infinity.

  4. Touched me. especially #20. I have had go say gooddre to 3 w/in 4 years. One age 15 (liver failure ) the following year, his partner of 17 yrs, than my 13 yr old Maltese from lymphoma I held each in my arms. It was so hard but I would not want to be alone when it is time to leave this earth. We now have 4 rescues 3 bdtween 68 & 99 lbs. & my baby 4 yr old Maltese. I dr

  5. This was wonderful to look through. We have two dogs: a retriever mix and a Pomeranian mix. We love them dearly. But just like this last page, every dog we have adopted, when it was time to end their suffering through illness or old age, my husband would take them to the Burger King drive through and give them a cheese burger, then go to the vets and he would lay on the floor holding our loved one in his arms as he/she went to sleep. I have always admired my husband the hero, because it was just too painful for me to do that….but he knew it was more important for our dogs to know he was there.

  6. Every pet owner should read this. I adopted my Karrington from our local humane society when she was 3 months old, she just turned 7 years old. We are dealing with mass cell tumors and maybe cancer on the back of her pituitary gland and I have already removed one and there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for her and I will be the last person she will see!!

  7. This was the best! Thank you so much for this article, I love dogs so much and I got teary-eyed from 1-20. This article touched my heart.

    Again Thank You

  8. i absolutely enjoyed each of the 20 pics. Had to copy a few that reminded me of friends dogs. My favorite are English Bulldogs. My daughter had Archibald (Archie) for 12 years and now has OTIS (about 9-10). They dogs become members of the family and it breaks our heart to think of losing them. Thx for great articles and pics… Happy New Year

  9. Beautiful presentation! It is good for all of us to be reminded of these things once in awhile. Dogs add so much to our lives and we need reminders to treat them lovingly.

  10. I just wish every poor abandonded mistreated even tortured animal finds some one some where to love and respect them for the unflinching loyalty and love they are born with the way I see it is the only thing all loving animals could have done wrong was being born into a non derserving evirioment they all deserve a chance to live a love filled life free of fear and pain

  11. My dog is my life she cheers me up all the time don’t know what to do without her she loves to go for rides in he car.She is a sweetie loves to go in yard and play

  12. Thanks to those who gave ideas on how to take care of this kind,it give me insight how to pet dogs, their needs and everything that makes them comfortable and understand them..

  13. Lovely sentiments but some inaccuracies due to the difference between humans and canines. First of all, comforting a scared dog only reinforces the dog’s fear – what the dog needs in a leader who treats the scary thing matter of factly so that the dog can learn it’s not scary. Secondly, yes, take your dog places, but do not let the dog travel loose in the car for your safety and the dogs – crates are safest, but if not a crate, at least a harness and don’t let your dog hand his head out the window – flying grit and dirt can damage your dogs face and eyes. Thirdly, most dogs don’t like to be hugged. “Hugging” is seen as aggressive behavior in the dog world.

  14. I just lost my 14 year old shih tzu this past Sunday who I adopted 11 years ago. I was an emotional mess. This article helped me so much and I know it has helped many cope with this feeling of loss of a dear pet. Thank you for this article. She died peacefully in my arms. I was singing to her the best I could with tears in my eyes and a knot in my throat. I seriously cannot thank you enough for this ♥

  15. Do some dogs go off by themselves when it’s their time to go? I’m pretty sure my chocolate lab of 9 years (he came from hurricane Katrina area) is gone over the rainbow. Yesterday I took him out side to throw his ball to see if he would perk up some, he had been moping around for several days. He went & got it then just started heading into the woods. I kept calling to him but he never came back & then it was to dark to see. It was real cold last night so I don’t think he made it. I found his ball today when it was daylight enough for me to see & I kept calling & looking around for him but didn’t see any sign of him.

  16. I loved my holly the collie so did my aged mum, even though brought up in a farming background took to holly n she went everywhere with my mum until her eyesight stopped her from driving. After that they were good home pals and gave my mum a great source of joy and company. When my mum passed not only the family mourned but holly too! She would not eat, only my food which we shared with her. Not just the dog lost weight but me too.I wud split my food on two plates and feed her by hand, had to get something down her as the neighbours had noticed her weight loss, me too. I laugh now call it the dog diet! My holly no longer with me which is sad but I know she knows she was loved and she had a good life free and happy cos of where we lived mum always used to say you will never get another like holly, she was free to a good home. We did and we loved her so much and me my family and friends mourned at her loss. I just hope one day I find my next holly, they are the loyalist true friend you will ever have

  17. Loved the article but I wish people would stop making generalized rules about end of life. My 9 year old kitty had to be euthanized very quickly in an oxygen tank as he could not breathe. I did not have time to hold him as he could not be out of that tank. sometimes a screaming and crying owner is not what an animal needs in their final moment. Stop passing generalized rules. If you choose to be present, that is great but if you cannot for whatever reason, it really is Ok. I am sure our pets understand.

  18. We just lost our pug Bugsy beginning this year. The last one made me cry because it’s true. Although he is now in peace we still miss him like crazy. :,(

  19. God gave us many wonderful things, but I believe dogs rate in the top 3. I miss my pal of 16 yrs. He was my buddy and pal, he helped me through so much.
The last is true, I was there and so glad I was when he crossed the bridge to his maker.
I miss you so much, Scouter!!

  20. I cried too. They are so sweet and you love all of them. The last one is so sad but true. We never are willing to part with them or those we love.

  21. I have loved and cherished my doggie since I was young. In 2000 I had to put down Fred, he was 11 and had multiple tumors the one that especially cause him discomfort and then pain was the one pressing on his spinal cord until eventually making him unable to walk which I discovered coming home from work one day …I walked in to see him pulling himself down the hall towards me at the front door to greet and welcome me home. It broke my heart, NO, it shattered it! I took him to the vets and concluded that he was in to much pain that the pain pills were not going to manage it anymore. So it was decided to leave him with the vet for 1 week of care to see if they could help him. Then answer remain the same .. No, and it was time to let him go so I held him and kissed him good bye. A year later my other dog at 13 had a stoke and was so unsteady that he could not walk so once again it was time to go to the vets. The decision to let him go was not something I was prepared to suffer so I asked my oldest son to remain by his side while I waited outside. I have lived with regret and remorse ever since. Let me say that the guilt never lessened as the years went by … I now have my Jackaboo who has turned 13 and has many non malignant tumors which we keep eye on but he is getting old and right now he is at the vets while I type this up. For his bath and another check up because I suspect he is now diabetic .. we just went through a course of antibiotics for ear infection. All my dogs have been either a Dachshund or Basset hound, so long ears need to be kept clean and watched for infection which is something they are prone to having. Luckily Jack has only had 3 that we have had to treat. I don’t know when it will be time to tell him it is ok if he goes because I will follow him soon. I have always said since I adopted him when he was 3 that I didn’t want to ever say good bye to another fur-baby of mine.. but, I may have to again with Jack. However, I will be there with him, allowing Rocky to leave without me there has tormented me for 13 years .. please don’t experience this for yourself and be there for them when it is time to say goodbye <. Stella

  22. Lost my 18 yr old shih poo about 4 yrs ago, loved him sooooo much, he died in my arms at the vets office. Still miss him lots, but now have a rescue dog who loves me and almost knocks me down when I come thru the door. A wonderful companion. People get a rescue animal and love them and see how much they love you back.

  23. Good luck with the treatment. My rescue staffy cross, Friday, has had two mast cell tumours. She had 3 surgeries last year but only one was malignant, the others were lipomas (fatty lumps)… So far, so good. It’s so hard to see your best friend go through tough times. Sending best wishes and cuddles to Karrington, I hope everything goes well for her.

  24. Wow. I read Denise’s comment and it sounds just lik a nun I had in school.
I will always comfort my dog when she is scared. It takes her from shivering with fear to calm and quiet, and as for hugging, I have a King Charles that loves to be hugged. He is all over me until he gets his hug.
I do agree about the auto safety though.

  25. I put down my 14 year old female boxer
Named Monie. And I just held her like
#20 said . One very sad day .
#20 could not be more true then anything I
Have ever read before . Thank you for writing
    This beautiful script ..:)

  26. I have a pitbull jackrussell mix and she loves to be hugged also I fall asleep at night with my arm around her so I disagree that she sees that as an act of aggression…of course she is a big lover. I also have a Yorkie and he likes to cuddle too so really have to disagree. He lays in my arms like a baby.

  27. It’s so true, everything even the very last one. I remember my dogs last day both of them . They died of old age. It was the saddest day. Not just for me but for my children. I had also bought a puppy that I had to put to sleep cause the vet said it had nerve damage, there was nothing that could be done. I held him and kiss him he looked at me with those sad eyes like he knew what was going to happen.. I held while the vet gave him the injection and he took his last breath. I cried for so long as well. When the vet brought him to me he was wraped like a baby. But he was a baby when he died, take care of your pets they are our children. Love them and take care of them like you would one someone to take care of you and love. Life is short.

  28. I miss my 3 beautiful babies..Logan,Dondon, Daisy..they were very special to me..i cried most when Daisy was gone..she was the only baby girl we had..

  29. “To love with the heart of a dog -one must see with the eyes of God “–” Chinese proverb.
-“Íf there are no dogs in heaven then when I die I want to go where they went”.-Will Rodgers.

  30. Oh goodness!Every emotion, every thought and feeling are all of these things and more. Our dear Bibi who was pit and sharpei crossed the rainbow bridge last April.. the pain of letting a dog go, of having to make that decision is truly the most difficult and impossible decision to make.. but we are our fur babies rock.. we are their pack leader. We now have our Abbi whose a rescue from Key Largo and is an am staff boxer mix.. she’s the light and love of our life.. everything we lost with Bibi has returned to us 100x. ♡♡♡ love your fur babies, folks.. they are the greatest light next to children in this world. 🙂

  31. This is such a beautiful peace that also brought tears to my eyes. We have 2 dogs and 2 cats all living in perfect harmony. Our Dachs is 14 and immigrated with us 11 yrs ago, he is funny and very loyal. Our Golden is 10 and the most sweet and tender dog you can think of. Both our cats came into our lives 5 yrs ago, the way they all play together is just so endearing. I am home all day due to MS and wouldn’t know what to do without them.
It hurts so much to think that at one point we have to say goodbye…..but we promised we’ll be there, the whole family, our now all grown up kids will be there too to say farewell. But it’s something that I have difficulty thinking of……

  32. There is nothing more relaxing or enjoyable than watching my boxer Kane run free. He loves to run more than anything and you can see the pure joy when he does it. Brings total peace to me after a long day of stress. He does way more for me than I do for him.
