20 Things All Cocker Spaniel Owners Must Never Forget

The Cocker Spaniel is primarily a beloved companion dog breed, though he remains a capable bird dog at heart.

Beautiful to look at (and labor-intensive to groom), the Cocker’s amenable, cheerful disposition also makes him a treat to have in the family.

Never more pleased than when he’s pleasing you, he’s as happy to snuggle on the couch with his favorite adults as to romp in the yard with the kids.

It’s been often said that dogs are the only creatures on earth that love you more than they love themselves. Well, Cocker Spaniels are no exception!

But sometimes, we take our furry friends and wonderful companions for granted. There are important life lessons that are sometimes easy to forget in our hectic lives, that all Cocker Spaniel owners must never forget.

If we want to pay back the favor and give them the best life possible, these 20 important reminders should serve you well as awesome Cocker Spaniel owners. The last one (#20) brought me to tears…

  1. I had two cockers go deaf with age and both adjusted just fine. They started to be a bit more velcro, but I just switched over to hand signs and touch. It was more of an adjustment for me than either of them. Sight is not their primary sense, neither is hearing. Smell is. I just adopted a senior cocker who is completely deaf and another that is not. I’m teaching the non-deaf one signals with commands, so if he does ever go deaf, the communication will still be there, since I’m teaching the other one anyways. Hand signs are also handy in a loud environment or crowd. Just be patient, consistent with what signs or hand signals you choose (they don’t need to be sign language, they can be anything) and with time and love, your pup will do just fine.

  2. this is my Charlie We have to keep him clipped pretty short as he has allergies to several things and his skin breaks out. Better now though tat he is getting immunotherapy shots.

  3. While mine was not completely deaf he could hear louder talking periodically. We found out from our vet after we cleaned his ears the ear cleaner had been one causing deafness. Well you can imagine how awful we felt so we came up with an alternative. We coned his ears to remive the wax every few months then used garlic mullen oil 1-2 drops and on a cotton swab the outer ear to sooth. The ear coning was rekaxing for him and was extremely successful

  5. I’m so sorry. It’s such a tough thing to watch your baby go through. Your baby girl looks like exactly like our guy Bandit. He just turned 12. He was diagnosed last yr with (carcinoma) a lymph node on his hind leg. We had it remived praying it hadn’t spread & put him on a regiment of herbs and a yr later he’s still here and nothing more showing yet. We lost his brother expectedly 2 weeks ago however & he had cushings but seemed alright. It’s so hard and so empty and my heart hurts for you. I’m so so sorry but know how special you are and were to her.

  6. We lost our wonderful little boy, Morgan, on Valentine’s Day morning. He was with us for 12 of the 14 + years my wife and I are together. He was our world along with his sister, Gracie Bunny. He was so, so special. He would give out the best howls to greet us, always sitting by me no matter where I was in the house, intelligent as can be and he had an absolute heart of gold. He had a recurring tumor(spindle cell sarcoma) and the third time we had it removed in a 5 year period, he ended up with sepsis. The infection was systemic. He got so sick, so fast and we had to make the decision to send him off to the Rainbow Bridge. We were in a daze, I’m disbelief. We are utterly crushed.

  7. I lost Brandy on my 16 birthday. she had throat cancer and was suffering so my dad had to take her to the SPCA where they put her down. That night I cried myself to sleep think of her. Even to this day I miss her and end up crying. I have one picture of her which I keep very close to me.

  8. Mommy was there from the very beginning and held you as you took your last breath… You took a piece of me with you and I can’t wait to see you again… R.I.P. My sweet boy, Sunny. I Miss you everyday!!!

  9. Happiest, sweetest little guy in the world! He’s slowing down, blind, a bit confused sometimes, but his wiggly butt never stops. We go to the dog park with his fursiblings even though he may walk more in circles, we let the wind blows in our faces as we go for nature drives, we still wrestle on Mom’s bed & he chews our fingers with his toothless mouth. He is immeasurable love wrapped in fur.
