Cocker Spaniels are dogs belonging to two breeds of the spaniel dog type: the American Cocker Spaniel and the English Cocker Spaniel, both of which are commonly called simply Cocker Spaniel in their countries of origin.
The American Cocker Spaniel is a breed of sporting dog. It is a spaniel type dog that is closely related to the English Cocker Spaniel; the two breeds diverged during the 20th century due to differing breed standards in America and the UK. Some of the words that describe the temperament of an American Cocker Spaniel are: Outgoing, Even Tempered, Merry, Joyful, Trusting, Sociable.
The English Cocker Spaniel is a breed of gun dog. The English Cocker Spaniel is an active, good-natured, sporting dog standing well up at the withers and compactly built. There are “field” or “working” cockers and “show” cockers. Some of the words that describe the temperament of an English Cocker Spaniel are: Playful, Faithful, Friendly, Quiet, Affectionate, Trainable.
Do you think you can handle this breed?
Cocker Spaniels may be widely known to be sociable and playful, but there are reasons why you should NEVER allow them into your family. You’d be simply crazy to even consider it!

I’ve been rescuing Cocker Spaniels all of my adult life…they are the absolute best dogs!!! My latest is 11.5 years old and I have had her for 10 years. She no longer hears as she has had surgery on both ears; but she hasn’t skipped a beat. She is still protective, loving, and beautiful!!! She has saved my life in more ways than I’ll ever be able to thank her. Every day I wake up so very thankful that she is still with me. She knows how much she is loved; and if I had it my way, I’d want to come back as my dog!!! I love you Chelsea Marie!!!!
