The answer to the question “Why the Labrador Retriever?” too often seems to be “Why not!”
Since there are literally millions of happy Labrador lovers around the world, why shouldn’t everyone love a Lab?
Given the breed’s good looks, trainability, loyalty, intelligence, etc., why isn’t this the dog for everyone on the planet who loves dogs?!
Bringing a Labrador into your life is a very big decision. A decision you should only make after doing your own research on what you're getting yourself into and the commitments you need to make.
If you are considering to own a labrador, or you’ve just become a new labrador owner, there are some realities you do need to fully accept.
Check out the twelve realities new labrador owners must accept on the next page! …and if you already are a labrador owner, see if you can relate!

Mine (3) were ‘chill’ after about 2. My black one was hyper when people came in until he died at 16, but mellow otherwise

1 and 2 have never applied, 3 and 12 definitely do. I’ve had four labs in my lifetime, they’re great characters and I would never consider any other breed of dog. We lost our last one, Bertie, in January. Our house will always feel empty without a dog to love.

They are certainly pack members and their pack is you and your household. But they should be at the very bottom of the pecking order.
