Woman Never Thought She Would See Her Stolen Husky Again

A loyal husky just got reunited with his owner and the story of the reunion will make your heart shiver.

Kameroun Mares had found the husky at a point in life when she needed love and companionship the most. She was being treated for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and just after getting chemotherapy in the summer of 2013, she met the young dog and immediately decided to take him in. She named him Semper Fidelis, which means “always faithful” in Latin, and called him Semper for short.

“He’s always been faithful to me,” Mares said. Despite Semper being so faithful, something happened that still put the pair apart.

Mares had to go to California back in 2016 from her home in Florida for her medical treatments, and her previous roommate had agreed to look after Semper. But when she got a call from her roommate, she heard something she wasn’t ready for.

‘“I was told by my ex-roommate that he was missing,”

Mares said.

On returning, she looked for Semper everywhere but to no avail. She had to move to California towards the end of that year, but she continued contacting shelters in Florida.

‘“For a year, I continued searching while in California, posting up fliers via pet sites, calling 15 vet places around where I used to live over there about him, calling the humane societies about him, shelters,” Mares said. “[I] posted info about him on Facebook, lost dog forums, and pages and groups. Every day I waited for a phone call about someone finding him … His microchip is registered to me since he was three months [old] … yet I received nothing. I was worried sick about him, and missed him dearly.”

When nothing worked, Mares finally decided to get help from Ana Campos, a private investigator, to help her track down her best friend.

‘“She had purchased a lifetime registration with AKC Reunite,” Campos said. “A year into this someone suggested she check her AKC Reunite chip again. So she went to the humane society in May 2017, and they checked online … That is when she discovered that a year earlier, on April 11, 2016, a woman added her name to Semper’s chip.”

It was revealed that the other microchip company didn’t check if someone was already registered on Semper’s chip. Campos then discovered that someone had also put Semper on Craiglist for sale for $200, which is the reason he was never found despite Mares’ endless searching.

Semper and Mares were finally reunited just a few days ago, and both of them couldn’t be less overwhelmed. While Mares broke down to tears of joy, Semper was uncontrollably bouncing around.

‘“Being able to play a role in this reunion and being present was one of the best days of my life,”

Campos said. Settling back to his family and a new home has not been much of a challenge for Semper. He likes taking long walks around the new neighborhood of California and exploring it with Mares, who is thankfully getting rid of her cancer.

‘“He still remembers his commands and tricks that I taught him,”

Mares said.

‘“My special favourite one is the ‘go home’ command … I tell him, ‘Semper, go home. Where’s home? Go home.’”

Semper sure knows exactly where to go.

‘“I see him as an extension of myself and my heart,” Mares said. “I am glad I have him back in my arms.”
