Taliban Captures Military Dog And Holds Him Hostage As A Prisoner Of War

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed that a military dog went missing during a mission.

According to the BBC, the dog belonged to a coalition partner of the United States military and was working for British forces.

The dog was apparently captured during an intense firefight with the coalition forces trying to drive the Taliban out of the Alingar Valley.

Two months later, Taliban insurgents released a video of the Belgian Malinois working dog, who they called Colonel. Colonel was the first dog that had been taken prisoner in Afghanistan.

While dogs are not considered pets in Afghan culture and are seen as dirty, the Taliban has held Colonel to high standards, since he is a trained working dog – something they’d never be able to do on their own.

While British special operations forces volunteered to find Colonel, it’s unknown if he was ever rescued, since the British Defence Ministry has called the mission “unlikely.”

While a Prisoner of War, Colonel has been nominated for the Dickin Medal, which is the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross.
