You ever try to get a baby or a young child to eat something? You beg and ask and cajole to get them to just try the fruit puree that you spent time preparing.

One of the time-honored techniques of getting your fussy posterity to eat is the “pretend to eat it yourself” bit. You know, where you grab a spoonful of something, say a delicious fruit puree, and then put on a big show about how tasty it is and how you are going to eat it?

You then often pretend to eat it with the intention that the child will see this and decide that they want in on the action. Has this ever worked, though?

That “two ships passing in the night food exchange” is part of this unwritten rule of being a pet owner. What would happen if we broke that rule, and involved ourselves in their mealtime?
