Mothers of all species never cease to amaze to me, particularly elephants. Known as one of the most intelligent, compassionate, and empathetic creatures, an elephant’s emotional capacity is often underestimated.
Capable of debilitating grief, elephants have been witnessed to do some pretty remarkable things for their pack, even cry and hold funerals for their loved ones. Especially the pack’s little ones!
If you have any doubt or have been underexposed to the ability of an elephant’s critical thinking, then this video will both educate and amaze you.
Shot over the span of thirty minutes (but trimmed for YouTube), this video captures a poor baby elephant who is struggling. Stuck in an irrigation channel, the baby is seen upside down and helpless.

At the point of filming, the baby had already been abandoned by his mother who I can only imagine was already falling apart with grief. That’s when something remarkable happens. Another female elephant from another herd passes by and steps in to rescue the baby!

She then does what any female would do for a baby in danger. She tries everything in her power to get the baby out of the ditch. Determination and will are evident during this life-saving rescue as the female elephant works tirelessly to save the baby. Finally, after a half hour of pushing, tugging and pulling, the baby was freed from the ditch and reunited with his mother.
