Meredith Lee was on her usual morning commute when something unusual caught her eye — a small, pink blur darting along the side of the road.
At first glance, she figured it was a dog out for a walk, maybe with an owner just out of frame. But a second look told her something wasn’t right.
“There was no leash, no person,” Lee told The Dodo. “Then I looked closer and thought, ‘What the heck is that!?’”
Curiosity turned to concern as she pulled over and stepped out of her car — only to realize she wasn’t looking at a dog at all. It was a pig.
At that moment, Lee knew two things: she was definitely going to be late for work, and there was no way she was leaving without making sure the little pig was safe.
“She kept running away, then turning to look back at me before bolting again,” Lee recalled. “I was terrified she’d run into traffic.”
Lee did her best to guide the pig away from the road, leading her into a nearby neighborhood. The pig seemed to think this was a delightful game of tag — and she was clearly winning.
Finally, after several tense minutes of pig-herding, Lee managed to corner her in a yard and called the local police for help.
From the time she first spotted the pig to the moment officers arrived, about 40 minutes had passed.
“Luckily, I always give myself extra time to get to work,” she said. “I was only about 30 minutes late — and honestly, it was worth it.”
Definitely not your average late-for-work excuse.
The police safely scooped up the pig and later informed Lee that she’d escaped from her family’s backyard. Thanks to her unexpected roadside hero, the adventurous piglet was returned home safe and sound.
Lee may have started her day with a simple drive to work — but ended up with a story no one in the office could beat.
